Even without all the equipment, furnishings and other finishing touches, the newest addition to Akron’s pediatric hospital is taking shape.

Akron Children’s Hospital recently began offering staff, community leaders and donors a sneak peek at its $200 million expansion project with tours of the Kay Jewelers Pavilion under construction on the downtown campus.
When the seven-story hospital building opens in the spring, it will house the hospital’s new Emergency Department and 100-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), along with an outpatient surgery center and a labor and delivery unit for high-risk births.
General contractor Welty-Boldt is on schedule to finish the project and turn the building over to Children’s on Feb. 20, Linda L. Gentile, the hospital’s vice president for construction and support services, said in a recent interview.
Children’s plans to begin treating patients in the facility May 5.
“We’re getting toward the end,” said onsite program manager Stephen Powell from real estate services company CBRE. “Only three months left.”
