Owner of University Square Shopping Center Files Bankruptcy in Bid to Clear Path for Redevelopment

The owner of University Square, a lender-controlled shopping center in University Heights, has filed bankruptcy in hopes of wiping out cumbersome restrictions on the property and clearing a path for redevelopment.

University Square Real Estate Holdings LLC filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition on Monday, July 10, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio. The company, created to hold real estate on behalf of bondholders who took control of the property in 2015, is out of cash.

The Eagle Avenue Bridge, one of several iconic structures that cross Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River, may be demolished next summer because of how badly it has deteriorated.

In an online presentation, the city of Cleveland said demolition is the best option for the bridge. City officials looked at several other options, like stabilizing the bridge, making it operational or moving it and repurposing it somewhere else — but found that the cost was too high for every other alternative.

Public use of Geauga Lake for people with kayaks and canoes and sunbathing on some of the tiny Sea World beach may be in the offing if the city of Aurora succeeds in snagging the gems.

Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin has proposed the city buy the lake and 40 acres of lakefront land from Industrial Commercial Properties of Mayfield Heights. ICP snagged some parcels in Aurora as part of its purchase of the Bainbridge Township side of the former amusement park.
